Matt Field transforms a flood-damaged Corvette C8 into the world’s first manual build for his latest drift weapon. But will it be competing in Formula DRIFT?

Formula DRIFT driver Matt Field couldn’t believe his luck when he finally found a flood-damaged C8 Corvette. While the prospect of buying a waterlogged supercar would terrify most of us, Field saw it as the perfect opportunity for an epic drift project.

Not shy about rewriting the rulebook, Field, the owner of Drift Cave, documented the entire build on YouTube as he transformed the former wreck into a one-off drift machine. Yesterday, fans got to witness the C8 Corvette at the official unveiling at the 2024 SEMA Show’s Borla Exhaust booth.

A Unique, Mid-Engine, FD-ready Build

The engine remains under the trunk of this revolutionary C8, housing a naturally aspirated LS engine. This is something a little different from Field’s usual supercharged competition setups. The custom manual gearbox conversion is also a world-first for the C8 Corvette.

Lifting back the covers during the unveiling, Field said the C8 build was “Not without challenges” and “an entirely new learning experience for me,” showing how much he’d pushed the boundaries to make this project happen.

The LS powerplant is engineered to scream up to 9,000 RPM, paired with an innovative 8-to-1 exhaust setup to deliver what’ll undoubtedly be an epic soundtrack.

Instead of the usual supercharger, the power is boosted by a single-solenoid, dual-jet nitrous system with two bottle heaters. The total output is expected to reach over 1,000 horsepower.

Field explains a little more about the innovative nitrous system in this video:

Field collaborated with various automotive industry leaders during the development process. Trophy truck builders lent their expertise to create numerous bespoke components. At the same time, Japan’s Liberty Walk Performance contributed their signature wide body kit, which looks right at home.

Will Matt Field’s C8 Compete In Formula Drift?

Since the unveiling, online discussions have sparked debate about the car’s eligibility in Formula DRIFT, given the mid-engine layout. However, regarding mid-engine cars, the current rules clarify that “The engine must remain in its original mid-engine location,” as seen in the Formula DRIFT rulebook.

Although rarely seen, mid-engine drift cars aren’t unheard of in Formula DRIFT. Old-school fans of the series may remember way back to the 2007/08 season when Tyler McQuarrie piloted a stunning Porsche 993 GT2 drift car.

Unfortunately, despite oozing old-school cool, the Porsche was somewhat of a flop. The turbocharged 3.8-liter flat six insisted on eating valve springs far too often. Hopefully, Field’s LS choice will prove much more reliable!

During the unveiling, Field stated, “What you guys see is like a show car that we’re pretty much going to throw on the wall as soon as possible, so that’s kind of mind-blowing.” This got many fans suspecting it’s ready to compete in FD.

However, Field intends to use the C8 as a demo drift car for now to develop and test the platform for competitive use. If things go well, we may eventually see the C8 debut in FD, but that will be unlikely for the upcoming 2025 season.

A Crazy Year For Revolutionary Drift Car Builds

Between Matt Field turning this flood-damaged C8 into a potential Formula DRIFT competition car and Mad Mike and his team pulling off a crazy feat by constructing the insane MADMAC McLaren build in a matter of weeks, before causing an upset against some of the world’s best shortly after, things are more exciting than ever for the future of drifting.

Who would’ve thought we’d see the latest mid-engine exotics sitting sideways alongside the usual 90s JDM drift cars just a few years ago? The drift scene just got a whole lot more interesting, and we can’t wait to see what 2025 will have in store!

This epic six-door, eight-seater limo drift missile packs 220bhp of tire-shredding goodness, making it the UK’s quirkiest bargain drift car on the market.

You know what they say – more doors, more *ahem*… friends. Seven of them, to be precise!

As keen enthusiasts of sideways action, the “Keep Drifting Fun” era was our favorite. You could throw a few hundred bucks (or quid) at a beater destined for the scrap heap before turning it into the ultimate tire slayer with a handful of DIY mods.

However, with prices for seemingly anything powered by the rear wheels shooting through the roof in recent years, drift missiles are now less common than ever. Instead, marketplaces are filled with “I NO WOT I’VE GOT” ads, where sellers insist on fueling their triple-price markup with pure rage.

Fear not – it’s not all doom and gloom, and there’s still hope for those looking for a unique, cheap drifter! We present the UK’s latest drift bargain that’ll turn you into a six-door Casanova.

This Isn’t Your Typical Drift Car (Or Marketplace Ad)

Not only do we already have far too much love for this absolute weapon, but the Facebook ad is also a thing of joy in itself, delivering some top-class British humor:

Do you have at least 7 friends?

Do you like the feeling of disturbing the peace?

Does unreliability make you weak at the knees?

If you answer yes to just one of those questions, this is the car for you.

The 3.2-liter V6 powerplant under the hood of the 2003 Vauxhall Omega limo produces 220 horsepower with a factory-fitted Limited Slip Differential (LSD), providing enough oomph to spin the skinny steel rear wheels – perfect for enjoying “Mexico’s” roundabouts.

As for mileage, you’ll be pleasantly surprised to hear that despite being 21 years old, it has only covered 59,000 miles. Saying that, with all things considered, it’s probably not the most convenient daily driver.

You Might Need To Make Some Compromises

If you’re wondering whether the suspension’s broken, thankfully, it’s not! It’s been lowered by 70mm, and with no further information, we’re praying it’s not got chopped springs.

However, given that it has 30mm spacers fitted (yes, thirty), we’re not holding out too much hope! Still, at least it provides the ultimate stance – assuming wheels lost in the fenders are your idea of perfect fitment.

After slamming it, the owner realized the exhaust hits the floor on almost everything, so he decided it’d be better off without it.

The exhaust used to hit the floor so I cut it off. It’s loud.

With this in mind, the new owner will likely need to find himself a friendly emissions tester and invest in a bulk buy of earplugs for each of the eight potential occupants.

Still, at least the gearchanges should be nice and smooth, just as Vauxhall intended, right?

It’s also in semi automatic mode all the time so you feel like Verstappen banging it into gears.

Ah. Maybe not.

On a positive note, the impeccable salesman knows his target market well, stating:

you’ll be banging a lot more than gears when you turn up in this bad boy.

Things Get Classier In The (Extended) Cabin

If you thought it looked classy(ish) from the outside, you ain’t seen nothin’ yet!

You’re treated to two rows of seating in the back, each with its own door. Only the finest materials are used. As the salesman puts it, “smooth leather for all 16 cheeks you’ll be carrying.”

Jokes aside, we can imagine that this once showcased true British luxury, with its elegant wood trims and comfy, spacious layout. Things have clearly changed over the years, though, and we wouldn’t recommend taking UV lights for the viewing.

The “leather” in the front looks rather cloth-like, but you’ll likely be grateful for it when throwing it sideways rather than ending up in the passenger seat on the slippy leather. For added hilarity, you can enjoy the expressions of the not-so-lucky backseat passengers in the rear-view mirror.

If you fit a GoPro in the back, you could film your antics and publish them on YouTube. Once you’ve gone viral, the list price of just £1,500, which is under $2,000 USD at the time of writing (yes, that’s all!), will pay for itself in earnings – surely it’s a no-brainer?!

Once you’ve made the (inevitable) purchase, make sure you drop us a message. We’d like to become your new best friends.

With a far more reasonable price tag, Traxxas offers its typical high quality with this offering. Once again, it comes with a vast selection of spares, repairs, and upgrades should you require them.

Traxxas E-Revo RC Monster Truck

Buy on Amazon.com

Our comment: For those looking for something a little smaller than the typically-sized 1/10th scale RC monster truck, this “micro” alternative could well provide the perfect answer.

At around half the size of the larger 1/10 scale E-Revo, this miniature hero proves that size doesn’t always matter!

Traxxas has designed the E-Revo as a whole new category of RC performance to ensure performance isn’t neglected with the impressive Titan 550 motor.

With a top speed of over 20 mph and fantastic acceleration, this is certainly no slouch and could be a perfect option for those looking to enjoy off-roading in a smaller area.

With plenty of spares and upgrades available and an exceptional price tag, the E-Revo is a real bargain if you’re happy with a smaller truck.

Manufacturer description:The included Titan 550 motor gives the E-Revo unstoppable climbing, roosting, and monster performance. Designed for those looking for rapid acceleration and top speed, the Hoss is a brilliant choice for flatter, high-speed runs and smaller jumps.

While the Hoss is perfect if you’re looking to perform wheelie-popping stunts with your RC monster truck, the X-Maxx below provides the ultimate durability in the Traxxas range if you’re looking for a more traditional truck.

RC Monster Truck Kits

If you’re unsure whether an RTR or kit option is the best choice, we recommend reading the “Introduction & FAQ” at the end of this guide.

While RTR RC monster trucks are ready to go out of the box, these kits require varying assembly levels.

Arrma Outcast 1/5 EXB EXtreme Bash Roller RC Monster Truck Kit

Buy on Amazon.com

Our comment: If you’re looking for a gigantic RC monster truck, look no further than this 1/5th scale offering from Arrma.

Although most of the truck comes pre-assembled, you’ll need to purchase all of the electrical components separately, which you should also consider when determining your budget.

While you get an incredible platform to get started, the beauty of buying your preferred electronics is that you can choose just how crazy you wish to make the Outcast.

It might not be cheap, but you can guarantee that this will look incredible when you push it to its limits and undoubtedly earn you a fan club, as these things are HUGE!

Tamiya Super Clod Buster Monster Truck Kit

Buy on Amazon.com

Our comment: Based on the legendary monster trucks of the 80s, the Super Clod Buster is a DIY self-assembly kit.

Once constructed, the highly durable bathtub-type monocoque chassis frame provides great durability. However, owners have mentioned that the steering links on these kits are a weak point, which we recommend upgrading during the initial build, as they’re a pain to swap out afterward.

This is a solid option, but since you still need the radio system and battery to complete the kit, it may be worth considering some of the modern RTR options instead at a similar budget.

Manufacturer description:The truck features a twin-motor dual gearbox 4WD drivetrain, 8 coil spring dampers and massive 165mm diameter tires, as well as a 4-wheel drive steering system to help the model navigate tight corners.

Features:

  • 1/10 scale R/C assembly kit
  • Optional 4-wheel steering (3-channel radio recommended for 4-wheel steering)
  • The Super Clod Buster body has been reproduced in injection-molded plastic
  • Highly durable bathtub type monocoque chassis frame
  • Front/rear trailing arm suspension with 8 coil spring dampers
  • Front/rear sealed gearboxes are equipped with differential gears
  • Includes TEU-103BK ESC (Original kit included a mechanical speed controller)
  • Two 540 motors included
  • Sticker sheet included

Tamiya King Yellow 6x6 G6-01 RC Monster Truck Kit

Buy on Amazon.com

Our comment: We love these awesome 6X6 kits, and there’s no question that they bring something unique to the market.

Although they’re not going to be the ideal high-speed choice for flying off huge jumps, they’re excellent for racing and navigating their way across rugged and technical terrain.

This kit will require the standard electronic components, which you’ll need to budget for, and construction before use.

Manufacturer description:The fun G6-01 chassis is based around a tough, slimline monocoque frame and offers excellent off-road performance thanks to a 6-wheel drive system.

Power is provided by a motor behind the front wheels, and transmitted to front, center and rear wheels via gears.

Features:

  • R/C model assembly kit
  • The 6WD chassis employs 3 differential gears to transmit power from the front-center-mounted motor to all of the model’s wheels
  • 6-wheel independent double-wishbone suspension is paired with friction dampers
  • The kit manual build creates a front wheel-steering model
  • It also includes instructions to re-assemble it into a 4WS model with steerable rear wheels – Separately-sold 4WS function transmitter and R/C equipment are required
  • Compatible with many GF-01 chassis Hop-Up Options and spare parts

Tamiya Lunch Box Black Edition RC Monster Truck Kit

Buy on Amazon.com

Our comment: The Lunch Box kit from Tamiya is a re-issue of one of their legendary old-school-cool OG 1/12 scale Lunch Box van, first released in 1987.

For those looking for a vintage-style RC monster truck, this could be an excellent option. However, if you’re looking for top-of-the-range performance, then we’d recommend heading to the RTR kits above.

As this is a kit, it’ll require the standard electronic components, which you’ll need to budget for, as well as construction before use.

Manufacturer description:The Tamiya Lunch Box “Black Edition” 2WD Electric Monster Truck Kit is a black variant of the ever popular 1/12 scale R/C Lunch Box van. This model features a stylish combination of a Black ABS molded body and chrome-plated wheels.

The R/C Lunch Box (first released in 1987) was loved for its camp appearance as much as for its R/C performance. The boxy minivan body is raised up over the monster truck wheels to ensure that this R/C van will get attention anywhere you choose to drive it.

Features:

  • ABS Box Type Frame
  • Rear-wheel 2WD
  • F/R Friction Dampers
  • 3-Bevel Differentials
  • Type 540 Motor
  • Electronic Speed Controller (Included)

While RC drift cars and their smaller siblings, micro RC cars are heaps of fun on smooth terrain, they’re not always easily accessible for everyone, and you may need to look at alternatives.

Or, perhaps you like to spend your time in the local forests, and you’ve found the perfect former beaten trails of the local mountain bikers where you could push an RC monster truck to its limits.

Some of you may even wish to create a unique obstacle course, which will undoubtedly provide endless possibilities and enjoyment.

While RC cars are great fun, the road-going versions require an ideal surface, where sticks and stones can often ruin the enjoyment, where an RC truck will plow its way over them!

RC monster trucks will likely provide the perfect answer for many situations, especially during off-roading lunacy.

Ready-to-run (RTR) vs Kit – What’s The Difference?

Reviewing this guide’s options, you’ll see RTR and Kit options, so considering which one best suits you is worth considering.

Ready-to-Run RC Monster Trucks Explained

Ready-to-run is the most self-explanatory method.

Once you’ve found the monster truck that ticks the right boxes for your needs, an RTR kit is as easy as removing the packaging before being able to test the boundaries of your new monster truck purchase once the batteries are installed and charged.

Ready-to-run kits are the easiest, most convenient, and often the cheapest method for getting started with RC monster trucks. They provide an excellent solution for beginners.

The downside of SOME ready-to-run kits is that if you have a high-speed impact and something gets broken, you may struggle to find spares to replace the broken components, which may require an entirely new purchase.

Please note that this isn’t always the case, especially for the RC monster trucks in this guide, so it’s worth checking out the spare part availability on the model you’re considering before purchasing.

RC Monster Truck Kits Explained

You would typically receive the truck in many parts with a kit, which you must assemble yourself. Don’t panic – the process isn’t as tricky as it sounds, and you’ll have clear instructions to guide you.

When choosing a ready-to-run truck, the chances are that if you have a severe impact, you may break some of the parts on your vehicle.

In this situation, you’ll most likely have to cut your losses or return your monster truck in the hope that it’s repairable, but the chances are that it’s not very likely or cost-effective.

With a kit, not only do you get to enjoy the pleasure of building the truck, but you could also consider making it a family affair. You’ll also gain an excellent understanding of how the vehicle’s different components work, making this the perfect introduction for an aspiring mechanic.

Not only will you gain an understanding of the truck and be satisfied with the build process along the way, but if you were to crash your RC monster truck and break one or more components, you could assess the damage and replace the necessary spare part(s).

The ability to fix any damage is the main advantage of a kit over a ready-to-run truck.

Once your replacement parts turn up, you’ll know how to replace them with your newfound knowledge from building the truck, and you can then enjoy many more hours of worry-free off-roading (assuming your abilities have improved since the crash, of course!)

Another advantage of buying a kit is that you’ll likely want superior upgrades as your skill levels progress.

Whether that’s an improved chassis, batteries, motor, or suspension, you name it; you can upgrade everything and build the RC monster truck of your dreams without having to buy EVERY part each time like you would with a ready-to-run alternative.

For the RC monster truck enthusiast, this can make for great Birthday and Christmas present opportunities.

Are you looking to upgrade your suspension? No worries, Grandma’s got you covered this year!

We always recommend carefully considering whether a kit needs additional purchases, so we recommend looking closely. For example, most kits don’t have all the required electrical components.

Now that you’re clued up with finding the perfect solution for your needs, you can head to the relevant sections of the article to find the perfect RC monster truck.

Although it uses the AWD platform, this is common for drift RC cars, and they come pre-fitted with drift tires as standard.

It’s not the cheapest option out there, but for those looking for a perfect introduction to RC cars, look no further.

If you’re looking for a simple, cheap option capable of AWD drifting, high speeds, and perfect for navigating your custom Gymkhana layout, look no further.

Now that you’ve found your perfect RC drift car, why not head off-road with our favorite RC Monster Trucks?

Thank you for reading our Micro RC Cars guide.

Whether you’re looking for a micro RC car for drifting, racing, rallying, off-roading, or rock crawling, we’ve provided something for everyone in this guide, and we do not doubt that all these picks will give countless hours of pure enjoyment.

Benefits of micro RC cars

Whether you’re into drifting, racing, or rock (well, pebble) crawling, even the smallest of spaces allow you to enjoy them to their full potential.

While some everyday rope or plastic could make the perfect opportunity to create your dream racetrack layout for drifting and racing, just about every household object could become an obstacle course consideration when it comes to crawlers.

Micro RC cars are an excellent choice for beginners looking to get involved in the RC world because they are inexpensive and durable.

If you’re looking to get into competitive racing when the world returns to normality, don’t worry – there are also micro-RC events.

With most micro RCs coming in at a fraction of the price of the standard-sized RC cars on the market, they also sustain far less impact due to their lightweight, compact size when the inevitable crashes do happen.

Given the benefits, micro RC cars are the perfect choice for kids, beginners, those on a budget, or perhaps those looking to see whether the RC scene is right for you.

Micro RC’s can be a tremendous amount of fun if you’re willing to use your imagination to think outside the box, and the micro RC market isn’t limited to just cars, either.

What scale are micro RC cars?

Typically, anything smaller than the traditionally sized 1:10 (or 1/10) scale is considered a micro RC car. While some manufacturers use a unique scale, you can still count on them being smaller than the 1:10 variants.

While some micro RC cars can be tiny, such as the 1:76 scale car below, and some going as crazy as 1:150, we prefer to opt for the slightly bigger options, as they provide a far more realistic experience.

Are micro RC cars better than 1:10 scale?

Although micro RC cars can be enjoyed both inside and outside, a larger-scale model will likely be more enjoyable if you’ve got plenty of space in the great outdoors.

Even the most minor debris can often become frustrating with a micro RC car, which wouldn’t affect a larger model.

With that said, a larger-scale car wouldn’t be as enjoyable indoors, as you’ll quickly find yourself crashing into almost everything imaginable, and given their added weight, you’re far more likely to sustain damage in the process.

Micro RC cars are the perfect way to enjoy smaller, confined spaces. It can be an ideal way for the kids to enjoy themselves or have fun with adults without needing to leave the house.

Alternatives to RC cars

Another popular alternative for car enthusiasts looking to have fun at home would be to get into sim racing.

From enjoying drifting games on your mobile to a high-spec gaming rig with a VR setup, there’s something out there for everyone to enjoy.

Our comment: The next car in our ready-to-run line-up is based on the awesome 1969 Ford Mustang RTR-X drift car.

Utilizing a one-piece molded chassis allowed HPI to build a replica that performs like the real car. With the drivetrain tunnel molded down the middle, this provides similar handling characteristics.

They’ve also introduced a low-profile layout to ensure that all the components sit as low as possible in the chassis, allowing for a low center of gravity for optimum handling.

The RTR Mustang is quite possibly the best ready-to-run car on our list and would make the perfect entry-level RC drift car straight out of the box.

HPI has once again produced a variety of hop-up upgrades should you wish to upgrade the car to an intermediate level further down the line.

Manufacturer description:The newest member of the HPI x Vaughn Gittin Jr. collection is here, and it’s the perfect little brother to the 1/10th scale HPI Mustang RTR-X Sprint 2 Sport and Nitro RS4 3 Evo+! Vaughn is the only one who can drive the real thing, but if you want an RC replica that can fit in the palm of your hand, this is the only version you’ll be able to find!

The Micro Mustang RTR-X is perfect for shredding tires inside and outside, with a high-powered motor driving all four wheels and coil-over shocks providing smooth power and excellent control. This Ready To Run Micro RS4 kit features a highly detailed and scale 1969 Ford Mustang RTR-X replica body for an awesome scale look wherever you drive! Our comment: If you’re after a reasonably-priced entry-level drift truck, this 1/16th scale offering from Mostop may be just what you’re looking for.

With top speeds of an impressive 20 mph (30km/h), it’s certainly no slouch for its size and could be capable of causing an upset against some of the more expensive competitors.

HPI RS4 Sport 3 4WD RC Drift Car Kit

Buy on Amazon.com

Our comment: Although the MST RMX 2.5 is the ultimate entry-level kit, the HPI Sport 3 drift offers a great, affordable, entry-level alternative.

Having stood the test of time, the HPI Sport 3 doesn’t feature the latest, cutting-edge technology. Instead, you get a highly-regarded platform with incredible durability that has stood the test of time.

Having released the Driftworks E30 for their 2023 update, some fantastic Formula D alternatives exist, such as Dai Yoshihara’s Subaru BRZ and Vaughn Gittin Jr’s “Fun Haver” Mustang.

Our favorite is the Worthouse S15, which comes with interchangeable vinyl. This allows you to drift as three-time FD Champion James Deane or his teammate, Piotr Wiecek!

For someone not looking to spend huge bucks on their RC drift car immediately, this kit presents a perfect opportunity for beginners looking for some simple fun without breaking the bank.

Tamiya TT-02D - Various Models

Buy on Amazon.com

Our comment: Tamiya is one of the most reputable brands in the RC drift scene, and their TT-02D Drift Spec chassis is a testament to the continued fantastic quality that they’ve been launching throughout the years.

If you’re not shy about building your RC drift car, the entry-level TT-02D kit could be the perfect solution.

As the 24mm wide drift-spec tires provide the perfect traction, the CVA shock units combined with the 4-wheel double wishbone suspension offer the ultimate handling for drifting.

With a full ball-bearing setup, an aluminium motor heat sink, and a tuned sports motor as standard, this is the perfect introduction to your RC drift career.

As you’ve probably guessed, there’s a vast range of hop-up upgrade modifications on the market to build the ultimate ride and all the spares you could ever need if you were to crash a little too hard.

It’s no coincidence that so many enthusiasts start with the TT-02D, as it’s the perfect entry-level kit, and Tamiya provides a massive range of body shells.

Although several kits are available, they are all the same parts with different body shells, so it’s entirely your decision as to which shell is best for you.

The only downside with the TT-02D over the ready-to-run kits is that you’ll need to factor in the additional costs of buying the electronics, such as a radio, receiver, ESC, steering servo, battery, and charger.

The shells also arrive as clear plastic, which allows you to fully customize and choose any colors or stickers that you fancy.

Don’t let the additional expenses put you off this fantastic kit, though, as the TT-02D is worth every cent once you’ve got everything up and running!

Manufacturer description:The TT-02 chassis is Tamiya’s latest entry-level 4WD full independent suspension assembly kit that offers ease of assembly and easy maintenance.

MST RMX 2.0 RWD RC Drift Car Kit

rmx 2 0 ford mustang liberty walk widebody

  • Manufacturer: MST
  • Suitable for: 14 years and up
  • Configuration: RWD
  • Scale ratio: 1/10th
  • Value for money product rating
  • Purchase link: MST RMX 2.0 RWD RC Drift Car Kit

Our comment: For many, the MST RMX 2.0 RTR will be the ideal choice for those getting started in RC drifting or looking for the most convenient and refined option straight out of the box.

However, this kit provides the perfect opportunity for those looking to create a custom RC drift car build with their own choice of electronics.

Utilizing the latest technology, we feel that the RMX 2.0, which hit the market in November 2021, provides the ultimate value for money against some of its more expensive, outdated rivals.

Whether you’re looking to buy a standalone chassis or take advantage of the discounted shells with the package deals, the RMX 2.0 has repeatedly proven an incredible platform for sliding sideways.

Although the RMX 2.0 can throw down huge, consistent angles right out of the box, it also provides two motor install locations and two servo install locations if you wish to adjust the weight distribution.

Although the kit comes in at a fantastic price, remember that you will also need to budget for the additional electronics. Once you’ve calculated this, we recommend deciding whether this or the RTR kit will better suit your needs.

Manufacturer description:The ingenious design allows for higher drift speeds and ensures a very simple but efficient steering behavior. The chassis is extremely stiff and nearly unbreakable. The structure of the top deck with its struts ensures very good cooling of the electronic components. Extremely large and variable steering deflections by Ackermann control increase handling.

The motor and the steering servo can be installed in 2 different positions to adjust the center of gravity according to your needs. The RMX S is the ideal drifter for beginners and due to its variable design also suitable for professionals.

Features

  • Two motor install options – upper or lower gravity
  • Two servo install options – vertical or lateral
  • Plastic high-rigidity construction
  • Unique front suspension system for great steering
  • The adjustable steering system with two-step Ackermann changes

tamiya tb 03 vds chassis rc drift cars

Our comment: If you’re not entirely new to RC drifting, and you don’t mind splashing a little extra cash for the ultimate off-the-shelf package, then Tamiya’s TB-03 VDS drift spec chassis is the perfect choice for you!

With the knowledge gained from their TA-05 VDF, Tamiya developed this top-spec chassis, which is perfectly tweaked for the ultimate drifting performance.

With a 2.5mm thick carbon lower deck, aluminum gearbox braces for the front and rear gearboxes, and an aluminum center brace to provide rigidity, the TB-03 was undoubtedly built with performance and durability in mind.

As far as quality and performance go, you’re going to struggle to find a better off-the-shelf kit than the TB-03, even if it is a little expensive and still requires a body shell, motor, and electronics to be purchased separately.

If you’re just getting started with drifting and this is a temptation, then we’d also recommend taking a look at Tamiya’s TT-02D kit above.

Manufacturer description:Based on the shaft-driven TB-03 chassis, this drift-spec chassis incorporates a 2.5mm thick carbon lower deck, aluminum gearbox braces to hold front/rear gearboxes, and a distinctive aluminum center brace to provide rigidity toward chassis pitch.

The well-balanced layout has the two-piece propeller shaft along the center of the chassis with the battery pack and R/C unit positioned at chassis sides. MST FXX 2.0 S RWD Electric RC Drift Car Kit

mst fxx 2 0 s rc drift cars

Our comment: Although the FXX 2.0 comes in at a higher price than the RMX 2.0, it’s likely to make for a more suitable setup for intermediate/advanced drifters looking to take their skills to the next level.

It may not have fancy carbon fiber parts, which admittedly leaves it more prone to damage, but if you’re drifting in an open space with few solid obstacles, that shouldn’t be too much of a concern.

This kit is also available without a bodyshell, but for an additional twenty bucks, we think it’s well worth going with one of the body shell kits, even if you only intend to use it as a spare, or perhaps for show.

Manufacturer description:The MST FXX 2.0 S 1/10 RWD Electric Drift Car Kit combines the centralized chassis configuration of the FXX 2.0 KMW, with a redesigned motor forward transmission configuration and front suspension system to create an amazingly progressive driving experience.

This rear-wheel drive-specific design is complimented by the unique MB rear suspension system that provides increased rear geometry adjustments, allowing the suspension to better handle steep drift angles with an optimized secondary reduction ratio for improved throttle control. All of these features combined create a high-performance chassis that provides handling characteristics more like that of a 1:1 drift car.

Features

  • The front motor configuration creates a feel similar to a real drift car, for a more realistic driving experience
  • CNC machined chassis with the readjusted center of gravity provides better weight distribution
  • Updated motor mount, suspension, and ATK system
  • The integrated steering system with redesigned aluminum alloy steering connection plate updates the geometry settings to create steep front wheel steering angles, allowing for greater drift angles
  • Equipped with MB rear suspension system for increased adjustments and tuning possibilities
  • Steel CVD axle for the rear transmission system
  • Standard realistic caliper and disc brake set
  • Full ball bearings
  • Hydraulic Dampers

Needed to complete

It’s worth remembering that this kit doesn’t come with the following parts, which will need to be purchased separately, but this allows you to choose the best products for your needs:

  • 1/10 Drift Body & Paint

  • Suitable for: 14 years and up
  • Configuration: RWD
  • Scale ratio: 1/10th
  • Value for money product rating
  • Purchase link: Yokomo YD-2E RWD RC Drift Car Kit

Our comment: Yokomo is arguably the highest-regarded company in the RC drift car market, but not all their products are eye-wateringly expensive!

The entry-level YD-2E chassis comes with a fantastic price tag with the plastic chassis version for those looking to get started.

However, if you’re feeling fancy, then there’s also the graphite ‘PLUS’ model alternative to choose from, which comes from the high-end ‘E’ series model.

Manufacturer description:The Yokomo YD-2E 2WD RWD Drift Car Kit is helping to drive the RWD trend in the drift world. Featuring updated “short type” Front Suspension Arms to optimize the Ackermann setting and prevent interference with the wheels, these arms offer increased steering angle and improved overall performance. The chassis tub allows the use of standard and shorty type LiPo batteries, as well as 6-cell nickel packs.

The kit includes LS Rear Lower Suspension Arms as standard for more down stroke and increased grip in order to achieve both stability and speed at the same time. A 4-gear transmission positions the motor horizontally and helps to prevent torque twists. Plus, the design helps to encourage power traction, providing increased stability and acceleration during corner exit.

Features

  • 4 Gear rear transmission

An Introduction to RC drift cars

As much as we love real-life drifting, we’re never going to deny that it’s an expensive hobby.

Not only do you have to worry about maintenance and repairs on your drift car, but tires and fuel need to be a serious consideration, too.

That’s before you’ve even considered the endless list of upgrades and modifications that you want to do to make the car competitive.

Once you’ve built the car of your dreams, you then need to consider the costs of getting to and from events, then when it gets more serious, the cost of racing equipment.

Although drifting is one of the most insanely exciting hobbies on the planet, unfortunately, it comes with a never-ending cost.

These disadvantages have birthed the concept of VR sim racing and free online drifting games, with enthusiasts building increasingly impressive drifting sim rigs so that they can get their precious seat time at a fraction of the price.

Not only is this extremely useful for training, but it also comes at a fraction of the price and inconvenience that comes with running a real car.

But, what if you’re still craving the physical art form of drifting?

Sure, gaming might tick the right boxes for some of you, but there’s always something incredibly exciting about the feeling of controlling a physical drift car, whether it’s full-sized, or in miniature scale. This is where RC drifting becomes the perfect solution.

rc drift car s14 240sx

Not only do you get to learn the basics of car control, gaining knowledge in areas like counter-steering alongside an understanding of weight shift and braking under load, but also it’s hugely entertaining in the process.

If you’re just getting started with RC drifting, our How to Drift guide will be a fantastic place to start, as it’ll give you a much deeper understanding of what the car is doing and how it’s reacting to the various inputs which allow you to master the art of drifting.

Once you’ve got to grips with the basics, you’ll want to decide which RC drift car is best for your needs, so let us explain the various RC drift car variations on the market.

Ready-to-run vs kit vs chassis – the differences explained

As you’ve probably noticed, we’ve broken down this guide into three different categories to allow you to choose the perfect drift car for your needs or maybe even the lucky person you’re buying for.

Ready-to-run RC drift cars

Ready-to-run is the most self-explanatory method for RC drift cars and often makes the ideal gift for a first-time owner.

You buy the car that ticks the right boxes for your needs (or perhaps your kids’), have it conveniently sent to your door, remove the packaging, and immediately begin testing the boundaries once the batteries are installed and charged.

You can probably expect a few crashes to happen very shortly after!

rc drift car ae86 twins

Ready-to-run kits are the easiest, most convenient, and often the cheapest method for getting started with RC drifting. We often think of these cars as ideal entry points to the sport.

The downside of ready-to-run kits is that if you happen to have a high-speed impact and something breaks, you will probably have to replace the entire car.

Therefore, if you’re looking to get serious with your RC drift car right away, or you can see this potentially becoming a long-term hobby, we’d advise that you continue reading. You’ll thank us later.

RC drift car kits

With a kit, you would typically receive the car in many parts, which you then need to construct yourself, but don’t panic; it’s not as difficult as it sounds, as you’ll have clear instructions to guide you.

If you opt for a ready-to-run remote-controlled car, the chances are that if you have a severe impact, you may break some of the parts on your vehicle.

In this situation, you’ll most likely have to either cut your losses or return your car in the hope that it’s repairable, but the chances are that’s not very likely or cost-effective.

With a kit, not only can you enjoy the pleasure of building the car, which you could perhaps make a family affair, but you’ll also gain an excellent understanding of how the different components of the car work – this is the perfect introduction for an aspiring mechanic.

Not only do you gain an understanding of the car and enjoy the build process, but if you were to crash your RC drift car and break one or more components, you could assess the damage and replace the necessary spare part(s).

The main advantage of a kit is the ability to fix any damage, unlike buying a ready-to-run car.

Once your replacement parts turn up, you’ll know how to replace them with your newfound knowledge from building the car, and you can then enjoy many more hours of worry-free drifting (assuming your abilities have improved since the crash, of course!)

Another advantage of buying a kit is that you’ll likely want superior upgrades as your skill levels progress.

Whether that’s an improved chassis, batteries, motor, or suspension, you name it; you can upgrade everything and build the RC drift car of your dreams without buying EVERY part each time like you would with a ready-to-run car.

This can make for great Birthday and Christmas present opportunities for the RC drift car enthusiast.

Are you looking to upgrade your suspension? No worries, Grandma’s got you covered this year!

We always recommend that you consider whether a kit may need additional components. For example, Most kits don’t have all the required electrical components.

RC drift car chassis

Kits and Chassis are typically very similar. If we couldn’t find the perfect body shell, we would consider buying a bare-bones chassis rather than a kit.

Sometimes, buying a chassis and a shell may be cheaper, but otherwise, we would consider opting for a kit and then keeping the shell as a spare for practicing.

Now that you’ve read our explanation of the different variations, you’re hopefully clued up on the perfect RC drift car package for your needs. Now, you can scroll up to find our top picks for each.

When life gives you a crashed Corvette, why not build a mind-blowingly insane nitrous-equipped LS-powered single-seater drift kart?

In the automotive customization scene, there are builds that turn heads and creations that completely redefine what’s possible. This Corvette-turned-drift-kart that we spotted on Cars & Bids is the perfect example of the latter.

The story begins with a C5 Corvette that met an unfortunate (or fortunate; we’re not quite sure) end in May 2018 with “minor to moderate” rear-end damage after an unfortunate encounter with a concrete barrier. Rather than restoring it to stock, the owner saw it as the perfect opportunity to create something truly unique, and he certainly didn’t disappoint.

What’s Left Of The C5?

As you can see, the stock fiberglass Corvette body is long gone, replaced by a custom aluminum frame. There’s a custom steering setup, front crash bars, and a roll bar. The side frames are professionally mig welded aluminum, and the crash structure is (tig welded) chromoly steel.

At 82 inches wide, it’s nearly 10 inches wider than a stock C5.

While at first glance, you’d be hard-pressed to identify any traces of the original Corvette, a few key components remain. These include front and rear suspension cradles, wheel bearings, and the OEM brake rotors and pads behind the upgraded 18″ Weld wheels, assisted by a Wilwood brake booster.

Given the weight (or lack of), which is just 1,550 lbs, the need for upgraded stopping power is probably not too essential!

“Built To Rip The Tires Off”

The owner states the above in the listing, and looking at the rubber shows he isn’t kidding! Given the custom kart’s insanely low weight, just a fraction of the original C5’s 3,245 lbs, he didn’t insist on downgrading the engine to make the power manageable.

Quite the opposite, in fact, which will come as absolutely no surprise if you’ve seen those sketchy-looking giant nitrous bottles that reside just above the driver’s head! After all, there’s a reason he named it “The Suicide Booth.”

The powerplant of choice is a mid-mounted upgraded 6.0-liter GM Performance LS V8, which appears to be the LS2 from the later 2005 model C5. Obviously, that wasn’t powerful or ridiculous enough in stock form, so the upgrades began, including:

  • LS3 cylinder heads for improved airflow and higher RPMs.
  • LSXHR high-rise intake manifold from Fuel Air Spark Technology.
  • A massive 103mm Nick Williams Performance throttle body.
  • 8-2-1 stainless steel exhaust. The crazy-looking custom setup, complete with a giant muffler, makes it look as though it’s ready to launch into space.

The owner states, “The engine is rated by GM at 450hp. With the nitrous installed and tuned I expect power at the wheels to be considerably higher than that.”

These upgrades, especially with the nitrous engaged, likely push the output beyond 500 hp. In a vehicle weighing only 1,550 pounds, this creates a power-to-weight ratio that would put most supercars to shame.

Here’s how it looked (and sounded) when an earlier version of the build headed to the track for a tire-shredding session:

Built For Sideways Action

The heart of the drivetrain is a built Hydra-Matic 4L65-E 4-speed automatic transmission. While drifting purists are likely upset at the lack of a manual and clutch, we can’t deny that it suits the single-seater kart vibe pretty well!

Already capable of handling massive torque loads, the gearbox also features upgraded internals to ensure lightning-fast gear changes that can be controlled via paddle shifters. The owner also states in the comments that it could be converted to manual with various transmissions.

The transmission is paired with a 4.10:1 limited-slip differential (LSD), which provides aggressive gearing and tire-destroying explosive acceleration. The aptly named Terminator X Max engine and transmission management system tie it all together.

While there’s limited information on the suspension setup, we can see aftermarket arms, and the listing includes an “aftermarket coilover setup.” It’s certainly sitting low!

As for top speed, the owner reports hitting 110 mph; he wisely chose not to push further. However, he says his “Best guess it around 150 although I wouldn’t recommend it.”

Street Legal? Not Quite

While technically still titled as a 1998 Chevrolet Corvette “Convertible” (they got that part right!), the creation isn’t quite road-legal currently, but it’s surprisingly close.

The seller notes that headlights, mirrors (included), and other basic equipment must be added for street use in some states. Emissions compliance may pose a greater challenge, though, likely requiring 5″ catalytic converters at the very least. However, it may be easier to register as a kit car rather than a Corvette.

Given the crazy low ride height and the fact that it only has a tiny amount of clearance under the 3D-printed carbon fiber front splitter, you certainly wouldn’t want to take it over any speedbumps!

It Sold For Way Less Than It Was Worth

The final sale price of just $10,300 is crazy cheap, considering everything included in the package.

Not only did the buyer get this one-of-a-kind, LS-powered drift machine, but the owner also threw in a MaxJax 2-post car lift, various tools, the forged Weld wheels pictured, and an additional set of wheels with new tires (plus two extra new tires).

We absolutely love this crazy creation and wish we could’ve snapped it up. It’s awesome to see what eventually emerged from what most would consider a total loss, proving that not everything should end up in the junkyard in the sky!

If you’re like us and can’t get enough of this beast, here are a couple more videos. It also shows why it might not be the most convenient daily driver!

Our first “Guess the Price” feature reveals a hidden JDM gem – the Nissan Stagea. Guess how much the Skyline’s daily-friendly wagon sibling sold for at auction!

This is the first in a series of “Guess The Price” articles, where we’ll cover some surprising prices of cars recently sold at auction in the US. We’re kicking things off with this unsung hero JDM wagon.

If you’ve ever dreamed of owning a Skyline but need something more practical for daily duties, the Nissan Stagea is the perfect solution. It’s reasonably priced, too, with this super clean example recently selling at auction in the US for just $10,000 at Cars & Bids.

A Brief Stagea History Lesson

The Stagea was Nissan’s answer to the Subaru Legacy wagon. Built on the Nissan Skyline R33 platform, it shares many components with its sedan sibling. Despite its mechanical similarities, the Stagea boasts a unique body style that sets it apart.

Long considered one of Japan’s best-kept secrets, the Stagea never officially made it to American shores. However, now that it’s over 25 years old, it’s eligible for import alongside the Skyline, presenting the perfect opportunity to bag a bargain.

The Ultimate Daily Driver?

With just 66,000 miles (107,200km) on the clock, this Stagea is barely broken in. It’s the perfect “one car fits all” solution. You can do the school runs during the week, then comfortably fit five of you to cruise across the country to the drift track at the weekend.

Imagine the wheels and spare parts you could fit in here if you’ve got a dedicated drift car. This could be the perfect everyday weapon for hauling everything you need.

While it’s ridiculously practical, it also looks awesome. This one features 18-inch JDM-style wheels, a Stagea RS Four front bumper and grille, matching side skirts, and an aftermarket rear bumper. The Series 2 Stagea taillights help add a modern touch to this 27-year-old classic.

We’re amazed at how clean it is throughout, especially underneath, especially when you consider that it’s now approaching three decades old.

While mostly stock, the interior features a Kenwood touchscreen head unit (currently in Japanese – JDM, yo!) alongside the quintessential JDM accessory – the ETC card reader you’ll never use! These toll cards are a rite of passage for anyone who buys a Japanese import. They’re useless in the US but super cool at the same time.

Potential Upgrade Considerations

Under the hood, you’ll find an immaculate-looking, naturally aspirated RB25DE 2.5L straight-six engine, pushing out around 197 horsepower and 188 lb-ft of torque. While not a powerhouse, it’s still respectable for a daily and has enough power to spin up the rear wheels.

“But, aren’t all Stageas all-wheel drive?” You might ask. Nope. Unlike some AWD Stageas, this model is rear-wheel drive (RWD), making it ideal for those who enjoy a bit of tail-happy action. However, the 4-speed auto transmission will dampen some of that sideways enthusiasm!

Our First Upgrade Considerations

If you’re serious about throwing it sideways, the stock open differential won’t cut it. You’d need to consider welding the diff or installing an aftermarket limited-slip differential (LSD).

A welded diff is a budget-friendly option for dedicated drift cars but has significant drawbacks for daily driving. An aftermarket LSD offers a better balance for street use but at a higher cost.

While the ride height looks ideal for daily use, coilovers will be necessary if you’re considering anything more than the occasional sliding fun around a corner or in a parking lot.

Also, those flat-bottomed leather seats will be a recipe for disaster with sideways shenanigans, so aftermarket bucket seats should be on the shopping list before you slide over to the passenger side mid-drift!

The current exhaust setup looks a bit lost in the aftermarket bumper, making it a prime candidate for an upgrade.

The Turbo Question

While turbocharged RB25DET variants exist, they come with a heftier price tag. Converting this NA engine to turbo is possible but requires significant work, including drilling new holes in the block for oil and coolant lines. It’s a job best left to the professionals, and the costs can quickly add up. Combine that with the manual swap you’ll inevitably want alongside it, and the bills start stacking up.

For many, the naturally aspirated engine’s reliability and lower maintenance costs will outweigh the temptation of forced induction, especially for a daily driver that sees occasional track use.

Other Stagea variants, such as the 25t RS Four V, could also be considered. These were factory-equipped with the RB25DET turbocharged engine.

The top-tier Stagea 260RS Autech Version even features a 5-speed manual and the 2.6L RB26DETT twin-turbo from the R34 Skyline GT-R!

Value Proposition

Depending on your needs, this might not be the perfect Stagea for everyone since it’d need quite a bit of work to transform into a dedicated drifter. However, at just $10,000, it offers incredible bang for your buck daily, especially considering how bad the usual JDM tax has become in recent years.

Sure, an RB25DET or even an RB26DETT with a manual gearbox would be the dream, but good luck finding one in this price range! There are options; whether that means engine swaps, a turbo upgrade, transmission swaps, or keeping it as the perfect stock daily as Nissan intended, it’s up to you.

Spotting JDM Bargains

Although this particular Stagea has already found a new home, it serves as a reminder that these lesser-known JDM gems are still out there if you look hard enough.

Finding these bargains is becoming increasingly difficult, so you’ve gotta think outside the box. It may not be the ultimate drift weapon in stock form, but as a daily driver with heaps of space, plenty of JDM goodness, and some modification potential, it’s hard to beat for $10k.

MA-Motorsports swaps a 2.3L Ford EcoBoost into a BMW E36 M3, resulting in a unique setup for drift circuits and rally stages.

Brian Wilkerson of MA-Motorsports in Maryland decided to try something a little different with his BMW E36 M3, dubbed “MA36RS.”

An Unconventional Choice

Instead of a traditional BMW engine upgrade or a popular LS V8 swap, he opted for the Ford Mustang’s turbocharged 2.3L Ford EcoBoost. He aims to create a unique and versatile 3-Series capable of competing in both drifting and rallying.

Key Components & Upgrades

When fully built, the EcoBoost engine can produce over 900 horsepower to the wheels alongside a significant weight reduction of approximately 200 lbs compared to the original BMW inline-six. These improvements, alongside the EcoBoost’s strong low-end torque, make the MA36RS the ideal drift/rally combo.

Wilkerson opted for a JEM Sport kit for the swap, providing essentials such as custom engine mounts, a clutch kit, and an adapter plate for the BMW manual ZF transmission. Additional mods included a Ford Ranger oil pan for better fitment, a Radium PCV baffle plate for improved oil control, and a BMW power steering pump with a JEM Sport bracket.

Custom Fabrication

Despite plenty of convenient off-the-shelf engine swap parts, extensive custom fabrication work was still required. The MA-Motorsports team crafted bespoke intercooler piping and mounts, a power steering reservoir, and a cooling overflow tank. They also modified the thermostat outlet to accommodate AN fittings and created a custom fan shroud using a CNC plasma table and manual press brake.

Unsurprisingly, the EcoBoost swap presented its share of challenges as the team encountered issues with the cooling system, which they resolved by fabricating a custom radiator setup and overflow tank.

Wiring complexities were addressed using HP Tuners for ECU adjustments, though Wilkerson is considering a future switch to a standalone ECU. The fuel system also required attention, with the team replacing a corroded fuel tank and sending unit.

Switchin’ It Up – From Drift To Rally

One of the most impressive aspects of the MA36RS is that it can be switched between drifting and rally setups with minimal changes.

For drift events, they run a stiffer suspension setup and a specific wheel/tire combo optimized for tarmac. When heading off-road, they switch to longer travel suspension, add mud flaps, and change to a gravel-oriented wheel and tire package, allowing the MA36RS to compete in both disciplines without extensive downtime or effort.

Future plans for the MA36RS include further engine tuning to optimize power delivery, especially at the top end, where the team has encountered some challenges. Suspension refinements are also on the agenda, intending to improve handling characteristics for both drifting and rally.

With the unlikely Ford EcoBoost engine swap in an E36 chassis, Wilkerson created a unique and adaptable car showcasing the versatility of the modern EcoBoost platform.

It’s refreshing to see unique drift engine choices compared to traditional BMW engine upgrades and increasingly common LS V8 swaps. We look forward to seeing this thing shred on the track and blasting through the rally stages!

Ford confirms its commitment to producing manual V8 Mustangs until they’re outlawed, much to the delight of tire-smoking petrolheads.

Drifting fans are delighted to hear that Ford confirms it’ll keep the rumbling heart of America’s pony car alive by promising to build manual V8 Mustangs until they’re outlawed. The V8 has been the soul of the Mustang since its inception sixty years ago, and Ford, thankfully, isn’t ready to let the legacy die.

Their rivals took a different approach to please the likes of Greta Thunberg, with Chevrolet opting for the eco route when it bid farewell to the Camaro in 2023. Dodge also shifted gears by opting for an electric Charger. Meanwhile, Ford doubled down on what makes the Mustang a rear-wheel-drive legend.

However, Drive reported that the Mustang’s global chief engineer, Laurie Transou, at the Australian launch of the seventh-generation Mustang, said, “[Ford CEO] Jim Farley has mentioned, and we agree, that we’re doubling down on our V8. As long as we can possibly sell our V8, we’re going to.”

Ford also promises to keep the drift-friendly stick shift, stating, “The pure enthusiast loves the manual transmission, so [we] continue to offer it. As long as our customers are desiring manual transmission and there’s a market for it, we would continue to offer manual transmission.”

For drifters, the manual gearbox provides precise throttle and clutch control. Despite their popularity and convenience, modern auto and semi-automatic gearboxes have failed to replicate this.

While paddle shifters can be a good idea for daily use, they’re impractical for drifting when your steering wheel’s busy going lock-to-lock and won’t replace the good ol’ clutch-and-shifter combo anytime soon for us.

The paddle option is available for newer Mustangs if you want it, but we certainly don’t recommend it for sideways antics.

This news particularly pleases drift enthusiasts. Electric vehicles (EVs) still have a long way to go before they can match the controllable power and weight distribution that makes the likes of V8 Mustangs the perfect choice.

Plus, let’s face it – EVs will never be able to match the sound of a V8 being thrown to its limits sideways. Instead, you’re just greeted with a painful, soulless screech of tires. But… You could always play engine noises through the speakers, right? Good luck making that one entertaining for the fans at drift events!

Ford’s current lineup already caters to a wide range, from the fuel-efficient EcoBoost models to the all-electric Mach-E and, of course, the tire-shredding V8s we know and love. This covers all the necessary bases and still (hopefully) manages to keep the right people happy.

Whether you’re a Blue Oval fan or not, we’re sure we speak for all the petrolheads out there when we say we’re grateful for the bold choice while its rivals choose to shift towards electrification.

Now, all we need to do is work on the Mustang drivers’ infamous sidewalk-surfing escapades to help Ford’s case in the court of public opinion!

Remember when six-figure prices were reserved for the rarest of rare JDM classics like the Hakosuka Skyline? Times have changed, and you might be surprised.

featuredimage will mkiv toyota supra prices continue skyrocketing

Our recent article discussing the Nissan 240SX, which sold for $31k despite having 119K miles on the clock, proved that recent prices for sought-after 90s cars are going a little crazy.

While you may be able to bag yourself a bargain missile or something that needs extensive repairs, if you want a clean, low-mileage MK4 Supra or a similar desirable JDM car in today’s climate, you’re gonna need deep pockets.

Recent prices continue to prove these 90s heroes are now playing in the big leagues, and we’re looking at some of the most surprising examples.

What’s Causing The Price Surge?

Several factors have made the Supra among the most desirable JDM cars. Its starring role in “The Fast and the Furious” franchise undoubtedly helped, but the limited production numbers, particularly for manual turbo models, have also played a significant role.

As time passes, finding well-preserved, low-mileage examples becomes increasingly challenging. Collectors and investors eager to acquire the finest examples lead to increased competition.

But it’s not just Supra/JDM enthusiasts and collectors looking to land the finest examples that have increased the prices. Under the hood, the Supra has something truly special that’s made it a perfect stock choice and become one of the most sought-after engine swaps, even today.

The Heart Of The Beast – The 2JZ-GTE Engine

bmw e46 2jz gte engine swap will mkiv toyota supra prices continue skyrocketing

A significant factor in the Supra’s popularity and value lies in its legendary 2JZ-GTE twin-turbo inline-six engine.

The powerplant has stood the test of time and is widely regarded as one of the greatest engines ever made. Its near-bulletproof iron block construction and overengineered components make it capable of reliably pushing out over 1,000 horsepower with the right modifications.

Unsurprisingly, its incredible potential has made the 2JZ-GTE popular in just about every motorsport discipline, even in the latest builds, particularly in drifting and drag racing.

2jz gte ebay will mkiv toyota supra prices continue skyrocketing

In the current market, you’re unlikely to find a decent-spec 2JZ-GTE engine for sale for less than $10,000, with respectable ones priced similarly to the one above. A turnkey 1,200-horsepower 2JZ-GTE setup will set you back almost $50,000.

Was 2019 The Final Call For Bagging A Sub-$25k Bargain?

sub 25k modified mk4 will mkiv toyota supra prices continue skyrocketing

Looking back at older sales in Bring a Trailer (BAT), you’ll find twin-turbo JZA80 MKIV Supra auctions like this one, which sold in 2019 – just five years ago. The price? $24,000.

Sure, it’s not stock, which would help fetch a higher price tag. Still, the high-quality bolt-on mods, which include aftermarket wheels, an A’PEXi Dunk exhaust, coilovers, and an ARC intercooler, are all easily reversible with the stock parts. It also has the Torsen limited-slip differential (LSD).

Mods in the cabin include a Pioneer touchscreen head unit and speakers, which we all know are an upgrade over the bleak stock 90s offerings. There’s also an aftermarket e-brake handle, aluminum pedal covers, and a HKS turbo timer.

Its twin-turbo 2JZ-GTE had just 79,000km (49k miles) on the clock at the time, but we imagine that’s no longer the case now!

It might be the less desirable auto variant, and the right-hand drive JDM vibes won’t be to everyone’s taste. However, that undoubtedly helps make it more affordable, especially given the challenges and cost of carrying out a manual swap on the MK4 Supra.

Still, this seems a pretty reasonable price for what is typically regarded as a true JDM legend (albeit an auto one), right? It would seem so, given that no other 2JZ-GTE Supras have been sold on BAT for under $25k since. Even non-turbo automatic models now commonly sell for $30,000-$50,000.

This Holy Grail Example Went For Nearly $250k

250k supra mk4 immaculate will mkiv toyota supra prices continue skyrocketing

In comparison, just one year later, in 2022, this stunning left-hand drive USDM MKIV was listed on BAT.

It’s immediately clear that this one’s a little different. Instead of talking about coilovers and aftermarket exhausts, the “mod” list is a little more gentlemanly for this one, including “Leather Trim Package, Theft Deterrent Enhancement, mudguards, heated side mirrors, and an ETR CD/cassette stereo.” It also features the removable sports roof.

You get the idea – it’s not your average ragged Supra, but rather the holy grail with almost every desirable factory extra included.

It comes with the original receipt, displaying the initial price tag of $48,895. 28 well-cared-for years later, and after 13,000 miles of what was undoubtedly pure driving joy, 26 bidders fought it out for what would eventually price this perfect example at $232,000.

It’s not alone in the $200k region, either. Another example supposedly sold for $230k just two months prior, although this auction looks a little sketchy and we’re not entirely sure if it’s legit.

Since then, another two years have passed, so we can only speculate about their potential worth now.

Which Direction Are Prices Heading Now?

It’s hard to compare the ones above directly until similar examples surface, and there’s plenty of speculation as to which way the classic/iconic car market is heading. Given the current financial climate, many rumors are suggesting a downward spiral.

Regardless, it’s clear that we’re still a long way from bargain territory. While examples like the ones above are few and far between, other more common offerings have still fetched six-figure price tags this year.

Even Red Ones Still Fetch A Pretty Penny

For example, this 1993 Toyota Supra Auto was sold earlier this year. While also an LHD model, it’s much less desirable than the ones above.

People looking to pay six figures aren’t typically likely to want the aftermarket wheels or the questionable ride height. Also, the “Renaissance Red” (also known as sorta-Ferrari-ish red) with “Ivory” leather doesn’t pair up to become the most desirable color combo either.

However, what does make it desirable is the number on the odometer – 9,000 miles, to be exact. Given the $42,279 receipt from the showroom, it’s clear that there are fewer optional upgrades than the one above.

Despite the auto gearbox, the color, and the mods, it still picked up a respectable $130,000 at auction.

… And The “Higher” Mileage Ones, Too

Finished in a classier and much more desirable “Baltic Blue Metallic” along with the sought-after six-speed manual. Along with a showroom price of $51,680, it’s the most expensive in the list, with the “premium 3-in-1 ETR/Cassette/CD player” adding gulp $985 to the list price – but, would you look at that stunning antenna!

Although it’s fairly clean and stock, the 57,000 miles of enjoyment have taken their toll, with the seller pointing out dings, scuffs, scratches, and stone chips around the body.

Ideally, it’ll need a full respray to get it back to tip-top condition. Still, these downsides didn’t stop it from fetching over $100k at auction just last month.

Surely The Modified Ones Are Cheaper?

You’d be correct in thinking the modified ones typically sell for less, and there will surely be some cheaper options out there if you’re willing to make some compromises.

However, if you’ve got a clean modified example that’s been done “right” by a shop, rather than butchered by the “guy who can do it cheaper”, then chances are it’s still going to fetch a respectable price tag.

The most recent example is this modified red ’94 Supra, which features comprehensive upgrades.

Tuning under the hood includes a PHR S23 turbocharger kit that consists of a Precision 6466 turbocharger, a 4.5″ intercooler, a twin-scroll turbocharger manifold, dual wastegates, and Injector Dynamics ID1300x fuel injectors, paired with an AEM engine management system. All of this produces a perfectly drift-ready 777 horsepower.

However, although it features BC Racing DS-Series coilovers, the grippy Toyo Proxes R888R tires make it clear that the owner is more focused on straight-line power than taking it sideways. Still, given the huge power output, we’re guessing they were still throttle-happy.

Despite living its best life, the car looks in excellent condition, considering it has 52k miles. This undoubtedly helped it collect a very respectable $135,000 at auction, proving that tuner cars aren’t always a terrible investment!

Prices Don’t Seem To Be Slowing Down Just Yet

Sure, the peak market prices have been higher in previous years, but some owners may be waiting for the right time to sell their pristine model. Given the financial climate, right now probably isn’t the time, but it’s clear that the trendline is still heading upward.

It’s worth noting that while we’ve focused on high-end examples, the MK4 Supra market offers a wide range of entry points. According to Classic.com, the average sale price of a 4th Gen (A80) Supra is around $75,000. However, prices vary dramatically based on condition, gearbox, and modifications.

Some can be had for less if you’re willing to work or compromise on condition and mileage. That said, you’ll undoubtedly still need to fork out over six figures for a pristine, low-mileage manual.

For a perfect low-mileage offering, we wouldn’t be surprised if it could still reach the quarter-million mark once again.

If you were hoping to score yourself a MK4 Supra as a cheap drift car, we’re afraid that ship sailed a long time ago. If you’re desperate to build a Supra drift car, its 7M-GTE-powered MK3 predecessor will be a much more affordable alternative, although admittedly not so desirable.

The Most Expensive Supra Ever Sold

While the prices we’ve discussed might seem steep, they’re pretty tame compared to the most expensive Supra ever sold.

The crown for the priciest A80 goes to a very special example that almost any petrolhead will be familiar with – the 1994 Toyota Supra from The Fast and the Furious movie. The iconic car, driven by Paul Walker in the film, fetched a crazy $550,000 at auction.

Needless to say, it’ll take something pretty special to topple that!
